Playing with God - Adult Liturgical Yoga Sequence

Scripture Reading Psalm 30:11-12

You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

Theme: Playing with God

In the joyful spirit of this scripture I invite you to approach the moving meditation with the intention of being open, spontaneous, fearless, and free, as you play with God on your mat.

Moving Meditation

Flow through the following sequence using the side (right or left) that is indicated. Hold each pose for five long, slow, deep breaths. Once you have completed the entire sequence, repeat it on the opposite side...and don't forget to "dance" through it!

Right Marichi’s Pose

Right Side Plank Pose

Right Gate Pose

Flowing back and forth - Exhale: Side Plank; Inhale: Gate Pose (repeat 5 times)

Left Trigger Pose

Left Low Lunge

Flowing back and forth - Exhale: Trigger; Inhale: Low Lunge (repeat 5 times)

Left Three-Legged Downward Dog

Right Tree with Eagle arms

Right Sky Warrior Pose

Right Extended Side Angle Pose

Flowing - Inhale: Sky Warrior; Exhale: Extended Side Angle (repeat 5 times)

Left Standing Split

Right Cow Face with arms sweeping up on inhale and down on exhale

Lord of the dance, thank you for transforming all of my hurt to hope, healing, and wholeness. I pray that my life will reflect your joy today, this week, and forever more. Amen.

Recline onto your back. Let your feet fall out to the sides. Extend your arms down along your sides with your palms facing up. Let go of your deep breathing. Let go of the word or phrase from the scripture. Simply let go and rest in the silence and stillness of a loving God.

Afterwards: Share the word/phrase that you recited during your Moving Meditation or an insight you had during the practice in the comment section below!

Note: The contents of this post are a portion of Ombrella's Liturgical Yoga session for the date specified above. Liturgical Yoga is designed for adults to resurrect the ancient teachings of the Christian tradition through body movement and in doing so experience their bodies as sacred places for dialogue with God. This weekly practice uses scripture from the Lectionary text as it follows the seasons of the church year. The format is inspired by Lectio-Divina, a way of reading the scriptures.
